WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly at the library door. Proceed with opening procedures to prepare students for learning. Activate background knowledge of their experience using the internet. Use a poster, whiteboard, or display a blank document to write student examples of internet use. Say: What is the internet? [Allow responses] The internet is a network or system of millions of connected computers. When we go online, we mean we are using the internet and accessing that network of computers. How many examples of using the internet can we think of together? Let’s make a chart of our brainstorm. Pat your head/Raise your hand/Touch your nose when you have an idea to share. Student examples may include games they have played, school programs they use, websites, recipes, video calls, messaging, and social media. Prompt for more ideas. You may choose to have older students write their ideas on the class chart themselves. Praise students for appropriate participation and idea generating.
