DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read aloud and model retell Read the first book with the discussion guide.. As you read, point out the characters, where the story is happening, and what is happening. After reading, create a retell chart (see example at end of unit) on a large poster. With student support fill out the chart to retell the story. You may choose to use writing or images (drawn or prepared beforehand) Using the chart, show students how they can use their hand to remember the pattern. Step 2: Read aloud & independent retell Read the second book with the discussion guide.. As you read, point out the characters, where the story is happening, and what is happening. After reading, lead students through a five-finger retell. Then create a retell chart with student support. The second retell should be easier for students since it will be similar to the first. With student support fill out the chart to retell the story. Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. Encourage students to practice retelling stories with their grown ups at home after reading their library books. Show them the folklore section for more stories like the ones they read today. Dismiss for circulation. READER’S ADVISORY, CIRCULATION PROCEDURES & DISMISSAL During checkout, ask them if they chose a fiction or nonfiction book to reinforce last week's learning.
