WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students. Follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning.

Say: What do you think the word describe means? If I asked you to describe an apple? What would you say? [Allow student response] Nice job! I noticed that when you described an apple you used many words and details to help me understand your thinking. We are going to need to be able to describe different kinds of books today by using many words and details.

OBJECTIVE Display objectives.

Say: Today, we have one learning goal. Listen closely: I can describe the difference between a fiction and nonfiction text.

Show Fiction Nonfiction T-Chart.

Say: We will use this chart to organize our thinking of differences between fiction and nonfiction today. What do you already know about the word Fiction? [Write responses]. What do you already know about the word Nonfiction? [Write responses].
