Elementary Library

Do not borrow titles in real time for students in Sora. Many Sora titles are purchased with limited circulations. You may accidentally use up a title’s circulations just in teaching. This is expensive and unnecessary. Choose one title to have checked out in advance to open for all of your classes. Some of the suggested titles for this lesson may be a repeat read. This is okay! Instead of reading the entire book you can select passages, and then ask students what they remember. Rereading increases comprehension. Asking students to look at something familiar in a new lens will keep them engaged. WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly at the library door. Proceed with opening procedures (including instructions for appropriate computer use) to prepare students for learning.

Activity: Think-Pair-Share

Say: Have you ever had a time when someone other than your parents tried to be your boss? How did it feel? What did you do?

Allow some group share outs.

Say: Have you ever heard the phrase, “Don’t yuck my yum”? What does that phrase mean to you?

Allow some group share outs.

OBJECTIVE Say: We are learning today about using Sora, our online library. It’s important for everyone to have access to a wide range of reading materials and to be able to choose what they want to read—whether that is online or in the library. But we are also going to review the importance of respect and choice in the library, particularly when it comes to reading books. As many of you shared, it is difficult and uncomfortable when others try to make choices for you–or pass judgment on something you enjoy, yucking your yum. The same thing with reading and library books. So today’s learning goals are: I can access SORA and use eBooks and audiobooks. I can respect others’ book choices. I can find a book I want to read.

Display objectives.

Say: You will know you have met these learning goals when you accomplish three things today. 1) Log into and borrow a book in Sora. 2) Explain why people have the right to read what they want online and in the library. And 3) borrow books from our library today.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Discuss

Say: Our book today is about the impact of reading. In this library, we respect each other’s reading choices and allow everyone the opportunity to read. Everyone is allowed to choose what they want to read as long as they are following school rules and their family’s rules. The same applies to our Sora library. Why is it important to let everyone have the freedom to read what they want (online and in the library)?
