Kindergarten Peer Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) is designed to provide systematic and explicit and instruction in phonological decoding and comprehension practice.

Phonemic Awareness Mini Lesson 3-5 minutes Say it, Tap it, Map it, Write it

• Say it: say the word and students repeat the word. • Tap it: students tap the sounds in the sound boxes. • Map it: students push discs into the individual sounds boxes. • Write it: students write the word in the Elkonin boxes. • Children point to the letter in the box as you tell them the name of the letter. • Students repeat the name of the new letter. • “ What letter ?” ________.

Name Game (New Letter)

This letter’s sound is: ________. Say it with me: ___________. Your turn: _______________.

Letter Sound

Rhyme Time (Do these rhyme?)

• Name two pictures at a time and ask, “Do these rhyme?”

• Say the word represented by each picture • “What’s the first sound?”

First Sound

• Say the word represented by each picture • “What’s the last sound?”

Last Sound

• Say a word slowly, emphasizing each sound and hold up one finger for each sound. • “What word?”

Say the Word

Stretch It

• Say the name of the picture at a normal rate • “Stretch it” • Reader says each sound in picture slowly and hold up finger for each sound in the word

Correcting Errors

Tell, Ask, and Start Again Tell the reader the correct response; ask reader to respond item again, and then repeat the row in which the item missed occurred (starting at the beginning of the row).
