DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Instruct
Say: When I need your listening ears, I’m going to ask you to put both hands on your head so I know you are ready to listen and not distracted by your device. Let’s practice. A call number is like the book’s address on the shelf. How do addresses work? [They tell you exactly where to go]. The same for call numbers! Our library call numbers have two parts. First, they tell you the section of the library. Second, they tell you the first three letters of the author’s last name which is where in that section to look because our books are shelved in alphabetical order. Who knows the ABCs? If you can sing your ABCs, you can figure out which letters come before the other. Books with APP at the end of the call number will be shelved before books with ZOE. Why do you think APP is shelved before ZOE? [Allow response] . Right, because A comes before Z in the alphabet. Step 2: Call Number Anchor Chart Explain that we will be creating an anchor chart on a poster or whiteboard to help them remember what each call number symbol means. Say: An anchor chart is a visual way of organizing our learning into a way we can remember it. Show a book from each call number section. Under a document camera, show students the spine label and ask what they think the call number might mean. Lead discussion to the correct answer and have ill out the anchor charts as the class works. ● F - fiction chapter books ● E - everyone reads picture books
● SP - books in Spanish ● GN - graphic novels ● BIO - biographies.
End with dewey numbers. Explain that books with call numbers that start with numbers are in the nonfiction section. Save what individual numbers mean for a later lesson.
Optional: Assess student understanding with the call number worksheet.
Step 3: Practice Searches in Destiny Discover Invite students to log onto their devices and Destiny Discover. Lead students through a few practice searches. You do not need to do all of these examples. You may choose to do whole group, partners, and then individual practice. ● Juan wants to find Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Do a search to help Luis find a book. What did you find? What is the call number, and in what section of the library will you look? ● Tessa wants to read other books like Smile by Raina Telgemeier. Do a search to help Tessa find books. What did you find? What is the call number, and in what section of the library will you look? ● Henry wants to find a book to share with his little brother. He really likes Pete the Cat , Elephant and Piggie , and The Day the Crayons Quit . Do a search to help Henry find books. What did you find? What is the call number, and in what section of the library will you look? ● Sandra needs a book in Spanish for class. She wants to read about animals. Do a search to help Sandra find books. What is the call number, and in what section of the library will you look?
