Week 3, 4, or 5 How do I find the book I want?

This lesson will be most successful if students bring their own school devices to the library, but can be modified for whole group instruction using a single teacher device with the screen projected. 3rd graders will be introduced to the catalog for the first time, while 4th and 5th graders should be able to move through this lesson at a faster pace. STUDENT OBJECTIVES I CAN… Students will locate books by using sublocations in the catalog (3.2) I can locate a book using sublocations.

RESOURCES & MATERIALS

VOCABULARY

Sublocation - a specific area in the library, such as a collection of shelves, display, or cabinet. Sublocations are listed in the library catalog records. Genre - a category or type of book that shares similar characteristics, content, or style

Examples of books from each sublocation Student devices Pencils Crayons or colored pencils Choose one high-interest book to read aloud if time remains. Choose from Traditional Literature or Biography to showcase sublocations.

WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Before permitting students to enter the library, review entering and seating procedures. Practice entering the library with the class. Repeat as needed. Settle students in seats at tables and instruct them not to open their devices until you direct them to. Congratulate them on their behavior and following directions. Explain again any reward system for behavior in your school library. Say: Last week, we started to learn to use the library catalog. Who remembers what a catalog is and what our catalog is called? [An organized, online list of every book in the library and Destiny Discover]

OBJECTIVE (1 minutes) Display objectives.

Say: Today, we are learning how to use Call Numbers and the Dewey Decimal System to find books in the library. Every single book has a call number. Those are our goals for today: I can locate a book using the call number. I can find a nonfiction book using the Dewey Decimal System. This is important so that you can be independent library users!
