NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR
Choose 2-3 books to read aloud per grade. You may use books from the resource guide you haven’t read, Beehive book nominees, or choose some of your favorites to share. Selections must adhere to the District Instructional Materials Policy. Please contact the Elementary Library Coordinator, if needed, to select appropriate materials.
The purpose of these weeks is to reinforce library rules and routines to make sure younger students have mastered them. Use this time to emphasize areas the students may have struggled with such as lining up quietly, behavior during circulation, raising their hands to talk, using shelf markers, bathroom and drink signals, book care, finding books, etc.
WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly at the library door. Remind students how they should enter the library and seat themselves.
Say: We are reviewing our library rules today. What is a rule we have in the library?
Acknowledge and clarify responses.
OBJECTIVE & DIRECT INSTRUCTION Create an I can statement that supports your goal for student behavior. For example, “I can raise my hand before speaking” Point out any posters or visuals to help students remember. PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Discuss Read the first story with the discussion. Pause story as necessary to redirect students to whole body listening and respectful participation.
