Week 3, 4, or 5 How do I find the book I want?

NOTE TO INSTRUCTORS This lesson will be most successful if students bring their own school devices to the library, but can be modified for whole group instruction using a single teacher device with the screen projected. 3rd graders will be introduced to the catalog for the first time, while 4th and 5th graders should be able to move through this lesson at a faster pace. STUDENT OBJECTIVES I CAN… Students will be able to access the online library catalog. Students will be able to search by keyword, title, author, and series. (3.2) I can search for books in the catalog by Topic, Title and Author.

VOCABULARY

Catalog - the online list of all the books in the library that tells readers where to find them

Post-it notes Student devices Pencils

Topic - the main subject or theme of a book

Title - the name of the book

Author - the person who wrote the words of a text

Format - the shape, size, and physical characteristics of a book

WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Before entering the library, review entering and seating procedures. Practice with the class entering the library. Repeat as needed. Settle students in seats either at tables or on a rug. Congratulate them on their behavior and following directions. Explain again any reward system for behavior in the school library. Say: When you want to find a specific book in the library, what do you do? [Responses could include ask the librarian, look on the computer, or ask a friend]

OBJECTIVE (1 minutes) Display objectives.

Say: Today, we are learning how to search for books so that you can be independent library users. Listen closely to our objectives: I can search for books in the catalog by Topic, Author, and Title, and I can find a book by call number and sublocation.
