Elementary Library

OBJECTIVE Display objectives.

Say: We have two learning objectives. Listen closely: I can listen to a story respectfully, and I can take care of books. We learned how to listen to a story respectfully last week with whole body listening.

Remind students how to do whole body listening.

Say: We are going to practice whole body listening by reading a book together. After we have finished the book, we will do a movement break, and then we will learn how to take care of books when we borrow them from the library. DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Read Aloud & Discuss Read the first story with the discussion guide. Pause story as necessary to redirect students to whole body listening and respectful participation. Step 2: Book Care Sort Say: One of the most fun things about a library is being able to borrow books. When you borrow a book from the library do you keep it forever? [Response] Borrowing means taking something for a short while and then returning it. You have to bring it back, or return the book, so another friend can borrow it after you. The library is all about sharing. If you don’t take care of your library books no one else will be able to enjoy it, and you may lose your borrowing privileges. Let’s play a game to learn how to take care of library books. Use the Book Care Kit to instruct students how to take care of books. Allow students to choose a picture card, read the back outloud to the whole class, and then individually or as a group sort into “No, we don’t” and “Yes we do” categories. Sorting can be physical (students move to different sides of the room to show thinking) or displayed on a board or screen. When finished, review with the class by mixing up the cards again and showing one at a time. Allow all students to show if this is a way to take care of a book or not with a silent hand signal (such as thumbs up or down, or one or two fingers). Movement break.

Congratulate students on their learning and express trust that they will take care of library books. Explain that next week they will be allowed to begin borrowing books.

Optional Step 3: Read Aloud, Discuss, & Practice Use any remaining time to read a second story with the discussion guide. Pause story as necessary to redirect students to whole body listening and respectful participation.

Review attention-getters, procedures and routines learned that day. Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. CIRCULATION PROCEDURES & DISMISSAL No circulation for Kindergarten through 2nd grade. When it’s time to leave, instruct students how to line 31
