When finished, read the poem out loud for students.

Say: It has been such a pleasure getting to know each one of you all year and a little bit more today. I have loved having you in library! We are going to use our remaining time to illustrate our poem. Your job is to draw a picture of yourself, a self-portrait, and the detail you shared.

Students then use remaining time to create illustrations to accompany the poem. Alternatively, you may choose to have students decide on their important detail, then illustrate it. While students are creating their self-portraits, circulate the room to collect each student’s detail and make the poem. Bring the whole class together to read the poem at the end of the instruction period.

Second grade -

Say: Now it’s your time to turn that brainstorm into a poem. The title of your poem is your name! Our first and last stanzas will look similar. But the list in the middle will be all about you.
