that the information is useful, we will write it on our graphic organizer and mark, or cite, where the information came from so that we can find it later. Review the graphic organizer with students so they understand the task. You may choose to display the graphic organizer under a document camera or make a simpler version on large paper. Depending on the class, you may choose to have second grade students work individually or in pairs on a graphic organizer of their own at tables while listening. Remind students of polite listening behavior and story time procedures. Use best practices while reading aloud. Use open-ended questions during story read aloud to help students connect back to the guiding question. You may choose to have students circle the citation symbol on the poster. You do not need to read this book in entirety. Rather, mark pages with relevant information and only read those. Model reading an informational text by noticing text features.

If necessary, include a music or movement break.

Step 2: Second Source Investigation Say: Well done. We learned a lot from that book. Let’s look at another source. ( Pull up video or World Book article) What kind of source is this? Is it a book? Is it a video? Is it an article in a database? Correct. Alright, same thing here. While we are exploring this source, if you learn some valuable information please raise your hand to share so we can add it to our chart.

Read or watch next source material with class. Guide comments and discussion to the research question and put student ideas on the graphic organizer.

Step 3: Synthesize Learned Information Say: Let’s review all of the information we learned today from our different sources, in our book we learned that….. (read out student examples and learning). So let’s summarize our new knowledge by finishing these sentence starters.

● The weather makes people_______________ ● When the sun, moon, and stars move across the sky, I can see ______________ ● An example of biomimicry is ______________________.

Students can share their ideas with a partner first and then share with the class. Second grade students may be instructed to write their ideas.

Say: Let’s wrap up. Today we learned to identify and cite sources when doing research.

Ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning. Dismiss for circulation. CIRCULATION PROCEDURES & DISMISSAL (10 minutes)
