WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly at the library door. Follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning. Pair students. Instruct them that you will be asking a discussion question and their job is to quietly share their answer with their partner. Say: When I ask the question, whisper to your partner your answer, take turns sharing, and when you are both finished stop talking and touch your finger to your nose. Ready? Who is your favorite person to talk to in the whole world? OBJECTIVE Say: I’m so glad you have so many wonderful people in your life you like to talk to. Today we are learning how to be safe when talking to people online. There are many opportunities to talk to people online—video games, computer games, and websites. To stay safe, you should only talk to people you have already met in real life. Not everyone on the internet is a safe person. You will know you’ve got it when you can explain why only talking to people you know keeps you safe online. Remind the class of the instructions as they discuss. Have partners share answers to the whole group.
Display “I can” objective. Say: Our “I can…” for today is, “I can only talk to people I know when I am online.” Repeat it with me!
