Elementary Library

has a lot of fun things too! However, the internet can be a dangerous place if we aren’t careful. It’s your job and the job of your trusted adults to keep you safe when you go online. Following safety rules and having appropriate behavior when we use technology is called being a good Digital Citizen. The first way to do that is to always ask permission before you go online and use the internet.

Display “I can” objective.

Say: That’s our “I can…” for today. I can always ask permission before I go online. Repeat it with me!

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Practicing Permission Case Studies Small Group Rotation Say: Let’s look at some examples of students who want to be safe digital citizens too. We will work together to figure out what they need to do. Divide students into small groups. Place the case studies around the library or on tables. Print the pictures and paste the case study text and discussion questions to the back. Students will rotate around the room examining the case studies.

Students will read the story, then follow the discussion prompts. Move around the room to help guide discussion. You may also create your own case studies tailored to your students’ needs.

Step 2: Student Writing Provide students with lined paper. Direct them to write 5 rules of safety while being online that they learned today. Share with a partner or whole class. Say: Let’s wrap up. What are some ways you learned to be safe online? There are many ways we can be safe digital citizens. I want you to think about our objective today–’Silently ask and answer to yourself, do I understand how to be safe on the internet? [Allow students think time]

Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning.
