computers. It’s a powerful tool and has a lot of fun things too! But it can be a dangerous place if we aren’t careful. It’s your job and the job of your trusted adults to keep you safe when you go online. We need to be internet superheroes! A big way to do that is to always ask permission before you go online and use the internet.

Display and read “I can” statement: I can always ask permission before going online.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION & PRACTICE Step 1: Action Rhyme Teach students this action rhyme. Repeat a few times to get wiggles out.

I’m a Superhero (To the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”)

I’m a superhero, big and strong! (Show muscles) Safe on the internet all day long. (Hands on hips) When I go online, first I always ask. (Cross heart) Shazam! Get me my cape and mask! (Clap on Shazam -- Strike best superhero pose)

On the last rendition, have students hop into their seats into a listening pose.

Step 2: Asking Permission Case Studies Say: Let’s look at some examples of students who want to be internet superheroes too. We will work together to figure out what they need to do. Use the included case studies with images to engage students in practicing asking permission to go online. You may also create case studies specified to your students’ needs. Show the picture and read the story, then follow the discussion prompts. You can engage students by asking for helpers to show the image, and/or pairing or grouping them for discussion. Guide discussion to help students realize asking for permission to use the internet on different technologies helps them to stay safe. Optional Step 3: Read Aloud & Coloring If time allows, repeat the Superhero action rhyme and read a book with the discussion guide. Invite students to decorate an Internet Superhero mask. They can also complete this activity after checking library books out.

Review “I can” statements and ask students for thumbs up or thumbs down if they think they mastered today’s learning.
