Text-to-self - relating a book to yourself to understand better

WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly at the library door. Follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning. Say: Close your eyes and imagine you are starting at a new school. I’m going to give you two pieces of advice and I want you to think and decide which piece of advice is most useful. Ready? First, a good way to make new friends is to compliment others and ask them questions. That’s the first piece of advice. Here’s the second: Red is a very loud color to wear. Okay, think. Which advice is most useful for the first day of school? Turn to a partner and whisper your ideas. [Allow time to partner share] Now, share out. What do you think? [Call on a few students to group share] In this case, what color to wear is probably less useful than tips on how to make friends. Like determining which advice is most useful, we are going to be using our analysis skills today to determine which connections to a text are most useful in helping us understand that book.

OBJECTIVE Display objectives.

Say: Here is our learning goal: I can analyze connections between different texts, the world, and self. What does it mean to analyze? 112
