WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly and follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning. Say: How many of you have played Connect 4? Will someone describe how to play and how you win? [Allow response] You all are going to be playing Connect 4 against me today while we read a book together. But there is a catch. To put a circle on the board and make a connection – you have to make a connection to the book we are reading first. OBJECTIVE Display objectives. Say: Today, we are learning to describe connections between texts, ourselves, and the world. Making connections helps us understand, or comprehend, what we are reading.
