CONTENT INTEGRATION UTAH STATE CORE STANDARDS FOR SOCIAL STUDIES

Standard 3.4.1: Choose a community outside of the United States. Locate that community on both print and digital maps of the Earth, their continent, country, and city or town, and contrast their sizes and the relationships in scale. „ Standard 3.4.2: Research the geography (that is, physical features and natural resources) of the community they chose in 3.4.1, and make inferences regarding how the geography influenced the cultures that have developed there. Standard 4.1.1: Use a variety of geographic tools to identify Utah and its surrounding states: latitude, longitude, hemisphere, climate, natural resources, landforms, and regions (for example, Rocky Mountains, Colorado Plateau, Basin and Ridge Region). Standard 5.1.1: Cite examples to illustrate how the physical geography of North America (for example, landforms, seasons, weather, bodies of water) influenced the lives of Native American tribal groups. NOTE TO INSTRUCTOR Students should bring their school device to the library. World Book Online will be more effectively learned if they can access it with guidance in real time. You may choose to show World Book navigation on a class screen, instead of individual devices, however, this will be a less effective means of getting every student into World Book. WELCOME & ACTIVATE BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE Greet students warmly at the library door. Follow opening procedures to prepare students for learning. 3rd/5th Grade: Introduce students to the topic of community by reading selections from one of the suggested read alouds. (Do not read the entire book.)

4th Grade: Compare Utah population map with geographical map. Ask: What do you notice about these maps?

Students may notice that the most people live along the mountains.

Ask: What can you infer about why people choose to live along the Wasatch front?

Students may infer that because that area gets the most water it is easier to grow plants and food. It is also the most comfortable temperature.

OBJECTIVE Say: Today we are using digital sources to try and discover why communities choose to live in specific places. (4th Grade: We just used maps to answer that question about people in Utah.) The place we 76
