Say: These are all great ideas. We are going to read a book together about the freedom to read. While we read it, I want you to think about that question. ( Note: You may choose to read a book in hand, rather than on Sora.) Why is it important that everyone has the freedom to read and make choices about what they read? Introduce selected read aloud and read on Sora (make sure to project your screen) or with book in hand. Connect the story to the theme of freedom to read. For example: ○ People who were enslaved were not allowed to learn to read. How did learning to read change Mary Walker’s life? ○ There is no such thing as a “girl book” or “boy book”. Why are books for everybody? ○ Why did the Taliban want to keep girls from going to school? ○ Miss Moore thought children should have access to books. Why? ○ How did Pura Belpre make the Latino community more welcome in the library? Why was that important? ○ What does Freedom of Speech mean? How is choice in reading and writing an expression of free speech? After reading, revisit the original question: Why is it important that everyone has the freedom to read and make their own choices about what they read? Allow students think and answer time. Utilize the following sentence frames to help students use academic language and evidence to support their ideas. ● In the book ___________________, so I think ___________________________. End the discussion with a reminder, that as children, their parents have the final say about what they can and can not read. No one’s parents can make a choice like that for someone who is not their kid. We try to honor many different families’ values in the library and no two families will be exactly the same. Step 2: Communicate Computer Use Expectations Make expectations for computer use clear, and consequences for inappropriate computer use known. For example: ● Stay only on directed sites ● Do not touch other people’s devices ● Treat device with respect ● Open and Close device when instructed Step 3: Model navigating and using SORA Hand out the listening guide and pencils. Instruct them that they will find the answers in your presentation of SORA today. Remind students of polite listening behavior. Project your screen. Show students the following steps to SORA and refer to the listening guide as you teach. 63 ● I think _______________ because _____________________________. ● When ________________________, then __________________________.
