END OF UNIT COMPETENCY WITH LANGUAGE FEATURES & FUNCTIONS By the end of the integrated unit, students will investigate different types of natural disasters in Utah and develop and communicate emergency preparedness plans that reduce their impact on your school and community. Language Functions and Features: ● Describe natural disasters (e.g., flash floods, blizzards, wildfires, earthquakes) ● Explain impacts of disasters on people, the environment, and infrastructure ● Ask and answer questions about needs before, during, and after disasters ● Propose solutions and safety strategies using logical reasoning and evidence ● Compare and contrast emergency response systems (school, city, state) ● Justify emergency kit contents or preparedness decisions ● Present findings clearly to an audience (peers, administrators, families) ● Conditional statements and cause/effect linking (e.g., “If __, then __”) ● Question stems for inquiry and analysis (What is...? Why does...? How can...?) ● Persuasive and formal language in written letters and awareness campaigns
