Appropriate use of AI in Elementary Canyons School District Instructional Supports Department
How to Explicitly Teach Appropriate AI Use
A simple way to communicate your expectations to your students with AI is the stoplight model. As you prepare a lesson, think through each component and decide if AI student use would be appropriate or not for each component.
Green light (AI Encouraged) AI may be used to support learning, thinking and revision.
Some examples may include: brainstorming a writing topic, taking practice questions for an upcoming assessment, create cover art for student writing samples Yellow Light (AI with Caution) AI may be used in limited ways, with clear boundaries and required citation. Some examples may include: using it for research with a specific chatbot with reliable sources, using it for feedback in writing on the first and second draft but not the final draft, ideas for a topic sentence Red Light (AI not Allowed) AI use would replace student thinking or demonstrate learning inaccurately. Some examples may include: having it fix spelling for a student if the goal of the assignment is spelling, a student asking it to “give you the answer” for a math assignment, have AI read a passage the student was supposed to read
You can teach this concept to students using a visual aid, such as a physical stoplight, to help them determine when AI is or is not appropriate for a learning task.
