Skills-Based Grouping in ELA Skills-based small groups are organized using Acadience Learning Online (ALO) group sort and diagnostic test results.
Consider student language proficiency levels, social emotional needs and IEP / 504 goals when determining skills-based groups. In the fall, use the Skills-based Small Group Time Planner to establish expectations and routines for implementing the skill-based groups. The planner outlines a timeframe for implementing practice stations and groups until students can maintain independence at a satisfactory level. Students not meeting with the teacher-led group will participate in practice stations or meet with another adult during skill-based time. All materials used during skill-based instruction (SBI) must be from the Focus of Instruction & Materials Document. Book Blitz Novels may be considered in SBI groups once the Wonders materials have been exhausted. Novels are for students in Group 1 in grades 4 and 5. The use of novels should not be the only instructional consideration during SBI for Group 1 students. Access the Intervention Manual using canyonsdistrict.org/manuals site for more detailed resources around Skills based Instruction.
