Topic 2
FLEXIBLE PACING STANDARDS
REPORTING STANDARDS
KEY LANGUAGE USE
● Fluently add multi-digit whole numbers ● Fluently subtract multi-digit whole numbers ● Solve multi-step word problems using the four operations
Standard of Mathematical Practice #2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Content Standards: Standard 4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. Standard 4.OA.3 Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations, including problems in which remainders must be interpreted. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies including rounding.

End of Unit Competency
By the end of Topic 2 students will be able to explain how sums and differences of whole numbers can be estimated as well as the standard procedures for adding and subtracting whole numbers. Language Functions & Features Describe data and/or steps to solve problems using: ● Observations ( notice, it appears, looks like ) and comparative language ( different from, similar to, the same ) to share results ( I notice this model has more… ) ● Mathematical terms ( compatible numbers, properties of addition, regroup, compensation, sums, differences ) ● Visuals (models) to support approach and/or solution ● Declarative statements to state conclusion ( This estimate is reasonable because... )
