Intervention Activity - Use Mental Math to Add (pg. 300A): Students will use place value blocks to break apart numbers and see and feel what is happening in addition. Analyze Student Work : In the TE on page 317 you will see Maggie and Lou’s work. Give the students a copy of Lou and Maggie’s work without the teacher notes. Have them analyze it with the partner for accuracy and come up with a justifcation for their answer. Select a pair of students to share their justifcation with the class. Then, students will come up with at least 3 different ways to model the Solve and Share problem on page 317.

Strand: Effects of Traits on Survival Standard 3.2.3: Construct an explanation that the environment can affect the traits of an organism. Examples could include that the growth of normally tall plants is stunted with insuffcient water or that pets given too much food and little exercise may become overweight. DWSBA#2
