UTAH CORE STANDARDS FOR MATHEMATICS

Math standards are represented in multiple ways in the following pages. They are presented in different forms to help educators discern the particular standards that demand more or less attention. The RISE Mathematics Overview is used by teachers to make connections and place emphasis on math domains. Instruction should match the blueprint percentages noted, including the types of questions and tasks the students are exposed to include Depth of Knowledge level 1, 2, or 3. The USBE Major Work gives i nsight into the major mathematical work of the grade level a nd standards that need to be mastered for success in the following grades. Additionally, the vertical alignment from prior to future grades shows the progression of the standards. The Utah Core Standards are organized into strands, which represent significant areas of learning within content areas. Depending on the core area, these strands may be designated by time periods, thematic principles, modes of practice, or other organizing principles. Within each strand are standards. A standard is an articulation of the demonstrated proficiency to be obtained. A standard represents an essential element of learning that is expected. While some standards within a strand may be more comprehensive than others, all standards are essential for mastery . Utah Core Standards for Mathematics Progressions identify the essential skills in the math domains at each grade level for vertical alignment. The progressions are also found in the Coherence section of the enVision 2 020 teacher materials. The Utah Core Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important “processes and proficiencies” with longstanding importance in mathematics education. The Questions for Teachers to Ask to Facilitate Mathematical Discussion support teachers in implementing the Practice Standards. A tool for aligning standards to increase the number of students earning an ACT composite score of 18 or higher can be found here. The attached document highlights important connections between the ACT and the Utah Core Standards. Teacher’s understanding and teaching the connections between the Utah Core Standards and the ACT will support students to be College and Career Ready.

Considerations for Educators • Plan and teach using the Utah Core standards • Use district-adopted curriculums to teach the Utah Core standards • Set clear standards-based learning intentions and success criteria • Use frequent, ongoing assessment of standards to drive daily instruction. • Provide opportunities for practice and extension based on formative assessment outcomes • Communicate student progress toward mastery of grade-level standards
