CSD Mathletes Extended Learning Opportunity

Purpose: Mathletes offers Canyons District elementary students in grades 1-5 an engaging opportunity to strengthen their reasoning, problem-solving, and math communication skills. In teams led by an adult supervisor, students collaborate to tackle complex, non-routine math problems, applying the mathematical practice standards as they explain and justify their thinking. Who can participate? Any team of 4-6 students in grades 1-5 who are interested. Procedure & Timeline: ● Team Structure: Students participate in teams of 4 to 6 members . ● Adult Supervision & Sponsorship: Teams are led by an adult supervisor (who can be an approved parent volunteer). However, each team must be sponsored by a Canyons District employee who handles the Canvas course materials. ● Monthly Preparation: The Mathletes Canvas course serves as a teacher resource. New, non-routine practice problems are added monthly for sponsors to copy, print, and use with students to prepare them for the final challenge. ● Official Registration: In February, a survey link is posted in the Canvas course for sponsors to register their student teams for the final competition officially. ● The Competition: Teams collaborate to solve complex math problems and are scored using a common rubric based on how well they explain and justify their mathematical thinking. Need More Information? For specific questions about materials, access, or timelines, you can reach out directly to Cynthia Lloyd at cynthia.lloyd@canyonsdistrict.org.
