Math Intervention Step-by-Step Guide Critical Features and Practices of Intensive Mathematics Interventions
Step 1: Analyze Formative and Unit Benchmark Data Identify students' proficiency levels and instructional needs by looking at standard classroom assessments rather than external screeners. ● Targeting Support: Use End-of-U nit Assessments, Sub-Unit Assessments, and daily "Show What You Know" checks to flag students who require Tier 2 or Tier 3 strategic intervention. ● Asset-Based Analysis: Move beyond right-or-wrong answers. Look closely at student work to see how they think about grade-level math. Determine whether a misconception is a widespread conceptual gap (best addressed in Tier 1 whole-class instruction) or a specific deficit requiring targeted small-group intervention. ● Assessment A & B Cycle: When a sub-unit or unit concept is introduced, administer Assessment A. For students who do not demonstrate mastery, pause to reteach the concept using targeted, alternative strategies. Once the intervention is complete, administer Assessment B to reassess and verify student growth and understanding. Step 2: Utilize Diagnostic Insights and Formative Tools Deepen your understanding of student mathematical thinking using a continuous, embedded assessment loop rather than tri-annual benchmarks. ● Continuous Progress Monitoring: Rely on daily "Show What You Know" formative assessments to track performance on specific skills in real time. ● Summative Mastery: Utilize Sub-Unit Assessments to gauge mid-unit checkpoints, and End-of-Unit Assessments to measure overall conceptual growth. ● The Performance Task: Capitalize on the end-of-unit Performance Task as a rich, multi-step tool to assess student understanding, application, and mastery of the unit’s overarching standard. Step 3: Determine Instructional Materials Use the embedded differentiation tools within Amplify Desmos Math to match the student needs highlighted in your daily and unit data: ● Boost Math™ / Personalized Learning: For students requiring
Critical Actions for Educators —-------------------------- ● Teachers & Interventionists consistently partner
and collaborate about instruction and student progress
● Teachers analyze all data from targeted intervention ● Teacher and student check in around progress of skills
● Student needs are communicated with
parents, families, and/or caregivers
● Teachers use the
