Elementary Math General Instructions Pacing & Flexibility, Vocabulary, Assessment, Daily Spiral Review, Special Education Curricular Coherence, Homework, and School-to-Home Resources and Supports Pacing & Flexibility The Mathematics Instructional Guide provides guidance for planning instruction by intertwining the Utah Core Mathematics Standards , the Building Fact Fluency Kit , and the Amplify Desmos Math curriculum. Following this guide ensures students access ALL core standards by the end of the year. To support students’ mastery of the standards, flexible instructional days are strategically scheduled into the scope and sequence. These days provide dedicated time for deepening conceptual understanding through mathematical complexity and depth, rather than rushing through procedural coverage. Vocabulary The essential mathematical vocabulary words, phrases, and representations for each unit are explicitly listed within the scope and sequence. The Unit’s mathematical terms must be taught in context through shared mathematical experiences . Students first engage with the concepts informally through Amplify Desmos activities, allowing them to anchor new words to ideas they have already explored. Formal terms and academic language are then explicitly introduced and reinforced during daily Amplify Desmos Synthesize discussions, ensuring vocabulary is connected directly to meaning rather than memorized in isolation. Assessment Assessment is continuous, multi-faceted, and designed to capture student thinking in real-time. Options include: ●​ Observational & Formative Data: Gathering real-time insights by actively roaming the room, asking intentional probing questions, and listening closely to students' mathematical reasoning, while explicitly evaluating their work using the rubrics provided for all classroom activities. ●​ Progress Monitoring: Tracking ongoing growth through daily "Show What You Know" formative tasks and mid-unit/sub-unit assessments to catch misconceptions early. ●​ Summative Evaluation: Measuring final mastery at the conclusion of a concept using a team-created common formative assessment that aligns with the rigor in the standards, End-of-Unit Assessment A, End-of-Unit Assessment B, and/or the Unit Performance Task. Daily Spiral Reviews A dedicated Spiral Review is seamlessly integrated into the end of every day's practice problems. Designed to support spaced practice over time , this routine ensures that previously learned skills are systematically revisited throughout the year. Rather than treating math concepts as isolated units, the Spiral Review: ●​ prevents learning decay ●​ strengthens long-term retention ●​ continually builds student automaticity . By engaging in this distributed practice daily, students maintain a high level of fresh, accessible knowledge for both current and future mathematical standards.
