PLANNING FOR DISCIPLINARY LITERACY IN THE SCIENCE CLASSROOM Utilizing the Science Literacy Framework
The science literacy framework helps solve the challenges surrounding student understanding of science by providing a scaffold and tools to do four things: ● Help teachers think about how to make their science lessons highly engaging. ● Structure dialogue to support student thinking and manage conversations in the classroom.
● Aid students in their engagements with text (reading) so that they can more successfully extract information and increase comprehension when dealing with written material; and ● Support students development of written expression, written explanation of understanding and written argumentation in science. ● Allows more opportunities for academic language production to support ALL learners, but specifcally Multilingual Learners. Engaging science is the umbrella over all components of a science lesson. WISR (Writing, Inquiry, Speaking & Listening, and Reading & viewing) supports the most important goal - student understanding in science. The intent of the approach outlined below is to thoughtfully and strategically use literacy techniques to have students read more purposefully, write more meaningfully and engage in more productive dialogue, all in the service of a deeper understanding of science.
