Learning Progression Example

Literary Texts 1. Identify the theme or topic in literary works.

2. Identify how each author’s use of patterns of events, character types, and/or stylistic choices. 3. Identify the similarities and differences between texts and the use of patterns of events, character types, and/or stylistic choices. 4. Analyze or compare/contrast how each literary work on the same topic/theme uses patterns of events, character types, and/or stylistic choices. Informational Texts 1. Identify the evidence used in the text to support the common topic and recognize when evidence is being emphasized. 2. Identify the interpretation of the facts presented in each text and analyze it for effectiveness in shaping the text. 3. Identify where the texts disagree about the topic using the evidence and interpretation of facts. Academic Language ● Complete a side-by-side analysis on 2 texts using the preferred method (SOAPSTone, rhetorical, etc.) and write or discuss how each author used differing stylistic choices to convey the same theme. ● Author Study: A Way for Students to Refect at the End of the Year Question Stems and Prompts for Assessment Literary Texts ● Which events support the theme of ______. How do you see the same pattern of events show up in _______ (2nd text)? ● What character archetypes exist in each text? Which archetypes do they have in common? ● What is the style of writing in the text? If you didn’t know the author, what elements would help you to identify the author’s style in a text. Informational Texts ● What evidence is emphasized in ______ (1st text) that is not apparent in ____ (2nd text)? ● Is there a fact presented in each text that is similar?
