When You Need to Take a Detour

In the What I Know Now video, we saw the graduates explain how they responded when they realized life was not going as expected.

Now consider these questions:

1. Did the way these people reacted seem reasonable to you? Why or why not? 2. Could you imagine yourself handling these kinds of disappointments in similar ways?

Remember, whether you would have done the same thing if you were in the shoes of these graduates isn’t really the point. We all learn to cope with disappointment in different ways. And whether we agree with what these graduates did or not, there are several coping techniques we can use when life takes a detour: • Own it: Recognize there is a problem and don’t deny it. • Change it: Don’t give up on having expectations; just change your expectations. • Share it: Involve someone else as part of your decision-making process.
