Dos and Don’ts for Supporting Advanced Learners

Further Supports for Teaching Advanced Learners:

● Confuse high-achievers with high-ability learners. For some advanced learners, their gifts may not translate into academic achievement, and their behavior can sometimes appear non-compliant.

● Give too many directions. Instead, provide a clear learning goal and focused feedback.

Participate in professional development offered on gifted learners, such as a Gifted and Talented Endorsement program. Refer students to our advanced learning magnet program, SALTA. Interested families can register their child for testing during the day at their regular school each Fall. Qualifying students will be offered placement for the following school year.

● Assume advanced learners are advanced in every content area.

● Make advanced learners peer tutors as a learning extension.

● Increase advanced learners' workload with more practice on skills and concepts they've already mastered.

Give unstructured independent study time.

● Assume that gifted learners are growing academically. Rely on formative and summative assessment data.

● Assume students with disabilities are not also advanced learners.
