The Utah Core Standards are aligned to content standards. They drive high quality instruction through statewide comprehensive expectations for all students. The standards outline essential knowledge, concepts, and skills to be mastered at each grade level or within a critical content area. The standards provide a foundation for ensuring learning within the classroom. A merican C ouncil on the T eaching of F oreign L anguage: ACTFL is an organization for language educators and administrators from elementary through graduate education. ACTFL has become synonymous with innovation, quality, and reliability in meeting the changing needs of language educators and their learners. ACTFL’s goal is to advance the practice of language learning. The ACTFL Pro fi ciency Guidelines describe an individual's ability to use language effectively to achieve communication goals. These guidelines categorize language pro fi ciency across four domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each individual's pro fi ciency level within these domains is assessed based on four criteria, summarized by the acronym FACT: F unctions and tasks, A ccuracy, C ontext and content, and T ext type. The World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages de fi ne the central role of world languages in the learning of every student. The fi ve goal areas of the Standards establish a link between communication and culture, which is applied in making connections and comparisons and in using this competence to be part of local and global communities.
