Affective Statements Appropriately expressing feelings and sharing impact
Affective statements are a method for communicating how you have been affected by other’s actions, both positively and negatively. This allows the speaker to own their own feelings and not place blame or judgement in an interaction which has harmed a relationship. This expression of feelings and impact helps provide feedback to others on how their actions have affected you and others in the community. This can bring awareness, help others understand the consequences of their actions, and build empathy within a community. positive feelings to be restored in a relationship when harm has occured to that relationship. The following 4-step process will allow you to form an effective affective statement. With practice, putting it in your own words will make it sound and feel more authentic. ● Observations: “ I noticed…” ● Feelings : “ I felt…” ● Needs : “... because…” (tie to common values/expectations) ● Request : “ Would you be willing…?” or “Could you…?” Affective statements should be connected to the common values/rules/expectations within a community. This can also provide information which can alter behavior and allow I noticed you talking during while I was teaching, and I felt frustrated because I didn’t feel respected. Respect is one of our school rules. Would you be willing to raise your hand when you want to talk? ● I noticed you running down the hall. I felt worried because that isn’t safe, and safety is one of our school rules. Would you be willing to go back and walk? ● I noticed you following my directions when I asked everyone to line up. I felt proud of you because that shows respect, which is one of our school rules. Would you be willing to keep doing that in the future? Examples ●
