Unit 2

STANDARD ● 8.1.2 Obtain information about various properties of matter , evaluate how different materials’ properties allow them to be used for particular functions in society, and communicate your fndings. Emphasize general properties of matter. Examples could include color, density, fammability, hardness, malleability, odor, ability to rust, solubility, state, or the ability to react with water.

CONCEPTS

SKILLS

● Properties of matter

● Obtain ● communicate

LEARNING PROGRESSIONS

● Each pure substance has characteristic physical and chemical properties that can be used to identify it ● Identifers include color, density, fammability, harness, malleability, odor, ability to rust, solubility, etc. ● Physical and chemical properties are important to know so that we can use them appropriately

VOCABULARY ● Solid ● Liquid ● Gas ● Mixture

● Solution ● Compound ● Substance ● Density

● Flammability ● Hardness ● Malleability ● Solubility ● Reactivity

POSSIBLE PHENOMENA ● All the pots and pans in my kitchen are made of aluminum, copper, or steel (iron). ● Diamonds are used in rings and also in the tips of drill bits. ● Both water and sand are used to put out a campfre. END OF UNIT COMPETENCY WITH LANGUAGE SUPPORTS ● I can explain properties of matter and how their properties make them useful for specifc functions. ○ Language Supports:

■ Abstract nouns to introduce concepts (effect, relationship, function, useful) ■ Connectors to link clauses (as a result of, therefore, instead, however, on the other hand) ■ Clause types to express causality (if/then)
