Audiovisual Media Use in Schools (Policy 600.02, Exhibit 5)

The purpose of this guide is to ensure that all audiovisual media used within Canyons School District—including films, television, digital clips, and AI-generated content—is selected and presented in ways that align with instructional goals and community standards. In a school setting, audiovisual media are powerful tools for learning, but their use carries specific responsibilities regarding age-appropriateness, parental consent, and compliance with licensing and copyright laws. Every employee is responsible for following these standards to maintain a safe, legal, and effective learning environment for all students. Core Responsibilities ●​ Prior Approval: Employees and volunteers must follow the school's protocol for obtaining administrative permission before any audiovisual media use. ●​ Mandatory Preview: Employees and volunteers must fully preview all media, including short clips and other assigned audiovisual content, before showing it to students to ensure it is appropriate and aligns with learning objectives. ●​ Instructional Alignment: Audiovisual media use must be directly tied to lesson objectives and used for active instruction; passive viewing is strictly prohibited. ●​ Principal Oversight: The school principal is ultimately responsible for all instructional and recreational audiovisual media use on school property. District Rating Guidelines Employees, and volunteers must adhere to the following rating standards based on school level: School Level Standard Use Content Restricted Content (Requires Parental Permission) Elementary G, TV-Y, TV-Y7 PG / TV-PG: For after-school/reward events ONLY; requires principal approval and written parental permission.

Middle

G, TV-Y, TV-Y7 PG / TV-PG: Requires written parental permission for every student.
