8.4 Natural Resources 3 Dimensions & Progressions

Unit 4

STANDARD ● 8.4.5 Analyze and interpret patterns of the occurrence of natural hazards to forecast future catastrophic events, and investigate how data are used to develop technologies to mitigate their effects. Emphasize how some natural hazards, such as volcanic eruptions and severe weather, are preceded by phenomena that allow prediction, but others, such as earthquakes, may occur without warning. (MS-ESS3-2)

CONCEPTS

SKILLS

● Natural hazards ● Forecast catastrophic events ● Investigate technologies

● Analyze and interpret patterns

LEARNING PROGRESSIONS

● Natural hazards cause large number of fatalities or overwhelming property damage. ● Some natural hazards can be predictable, and others are not predictable ● Mapping the history of natural hazards in a region can help us determine the likelihood of future natural hazards ● Volcanic eruptions and severe weather are preceded by phenomena that allow for reliable patterns. ● Due to human increases in burning of fossil fuels, some natural hazards, like severe weather, have increased in frequency and strength.

VOCABULARY

● Natural hazard ● predictability

● Frequency ● Magnitude

POSSIBLE PHENOMENA ● Hurricanes arrive early in the school year for those living near the Gulf Coast of the United States. ● The intensity, frequency, and duration of North Atlantic hurricanes, as well as the frequency of the strongest hurricanes, have all increased since the early 1980s. ● On November 8, 2018, a wildfre tore through Butte County, California, causing 250,000 people to fee their homes. ● For years before Krakatoa erupted in 1883, there were earthquakes in the area. In the months before the eruption, steam began venting from the volcano. ● Japan has invested approximately 6.4 billion dollars per year since 1980 in disaster prevention. END OF UNIT COMPETENCY WITH LANGUAGE SUPPORTS ● I can explain how we use data to predict catastrophic events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanic eruptions, etc.
