6th Grade Science Guide
6.4: Ecosystems 3 Dimensions & Progressions
Unit 5
STANDARD 6.4.5
6.4.5 Evaluate competing design solutions for preserving ecosystem services that protect resources and biodiversity based on how well the solutions maintain stability within the ecosystem. Emphasize obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information of differing design solutions. Examples could include policies affecting ecosystems, responding to invasive species or solutions for the preservation of ecosystem resources specifc to Utah, such as air and water quality and prevention of soil erosion. MS-LS2-5
CONCEPTS
SKILLS
● Design solutions for preserving ecosystems ● Solutions to maintain stability within the ecosystem
● Evaluate ● Obtain, evaluate and communicate information on design solutions
LEARNING PROGRESSIONS
● Identify and describe design solutions for ecosystems ● Evaluate evidence for current design solutions ● Create a rubric to evaluate design solutions ● Compare design solutions using the rubric VOCABULARY ● Soil erosion ● Air quality ● Water quality ● Invasive species ● Constraints
● Stability ● Design Solutions ● Resources ● Criteria
POSSIBLE PHENOMENA
● Humans harvest brine shrimp to feed crustaceans. ● Utah Lake has has been impacted by years of issues, which have led to invasive species, toxic algal blooms, etc. There is currently debate about how best to clean it up which might peak student interest. ● Utah boaters have to clean and get boats inspected after leaving a Utah water reservoir so as to not spread the invasive Quagga Mussel species.
END OF UNIT COMPETENCY WITH LANGUAGE SUPPORTS
● I can evaluate a solution to help preserve, protect, or renew an ecosystem. ○ Language Supports: ■ Connectors to combine ideas (As a result of, therefore, etc.)
