Have students test different types of materials (aluminum foil, styrofoam, cotton balls, etc.,)and how they minimize or maximize heat transfer utilizing the temperature probes. Students read about thermal protection systems used on re-entry vehicles and use their knowledge from the unit to design a re-entry vehicle that will safely return astronauts to Earth. Lesson Plan

ELA CONNECTIONS ● Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks. Conduct short research projects to answer a question (including a self-generated question), drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions that allow for multiple avenues of exploration.
