Skill Building
Discuss Before Writing: The Convince Me! component of each lesson gives students an opportunity to write to explain and reason about a specific problem. Have them read the question, process their thoughts, work on the problem alone for a short time and then before expecting the students to give a written explanation, have them work through Convince Me! with a partner to discuss their thinking and reasoning. Teacher provides appropriate sentence frames to support discussion and writing.
Extension
9-9 Pick a Project 9B: Code Talkers. Fast finishers can then see if they can crack a partner’s code.
Interdisciplinary Connections
Science
STEM Project: Fractions and Information Transfer
Strand: Wave Patterns Standard 4.3.3: Design a solution to an information transfer problem using wave patterns. Define the problem, identify criteria and constraints, develop possible solutions using models, analyze data from testing solutions, and propose modifications for optimizing a solution. Examples could include using light to transmit a message in Morse code or using lenses and mirrors to see objects that are far away.
