Academic Vocabulary: Explicitly teach “ estimate” using the systematic vocabulary routine. Remind students they can use lengths of objects they know to estimate ie., paperclip thumb, book arm, etc. Use this sentence frame to support estimation, “I know ____ is about _ because ______.” 12-9 STEM Activity: Measuring Plants Precisely. Allow students to collect several different stems to measure with a partner. Students can compare their measurements with their classmates, reach a consensus for each stem, and record their fndings on a chart.
