Make Connection s: Students need to spend time using base ten blocks to understand addition. Be sure that connections are made as students as students move to drawing representations and then to abstract. Have base-ten blocks on the desks throughout the entire topic for student use. Students can also be challenged to model their solutions with pictorial representations or base-ten blocks.
