Math 3 Read Routine – (Close Read) High Quality Implementation Checklist - Teacher Guided
NOTE: The teacher will need to model the Math Close Read in the beginning but the ultimate goal is to support students in being able to innately use the close read strategy when they come across word and other complex problems. Preparation for a Close Read ❏ Select a problem worthy of a Close Read ❏ Work the problem to find the answer and notice any difficulties students may encounter including language complexity ❏ Decide which manipulatives will be needed to solve the problem ❏ Precisely partner students ❏ Sentence frames for each read 1 st Read – No pencil Teacher ❏ Presents the problem Student ❏ Read the problem with no pencil (choral, partner, independently)

Student ❏ Re reads the problem looking for vocabulary that needs clarification ❏ Annotates the problem circling, underlining important information ❏ Strikes through any irrelevant info ❏ Notes any graphics, tables or pictures to help understand and solve the problem ❏ Discusses with their partner using the provided sentence frames Student ❏ Begins to solve the problem ❏ Read a little, do a little until problem is solved ❏ Uses sentence frames to discuss with their partner ❏ Answer the questions, “Does our answer make sense? How do we know?”
