Skills-Based Grouping in Math

Math Framework: Skills-Based Small Groups & Stations Skills-based small groups are organized using Amplify Desmos Math unit assessments, checkpoint data, Show What You Know checks, and both sub-unit and end-of-unit assessment results. Grouping is dynamic; teachers should utilize daily data collection —such as digital exit tickets, lesson-level insights, and observational notes—to ensure groups remain fluid and responsive to real-time student needs. Consider student language proficiency levels, social-emotional needs, and IEP / 504 goals when determining these mathematical skills-based groups. Initial SBI Procedures: Fall Establish expectations and routines for implementing these targeted groups with PLC teams. Focus on building mathematical community and implementing independent and/or partner practice stations until students can maintain productivity and autonomy at a satisfactory level. Students not meeting with the teacher-led group will participate in collaborative math stations, digital Desmos practice, or meet with another adult during this differentiated instruction block. Ongoing SBI Procedures: Winter and Spring Beyond the initial fall implementation, skills-based instruction remains a core component of daily math instruction. To maintain momentum and ensure maximum impact through the winter and spring, the following procedures must be standard practice: ●​ Routine Data Cycles: Continuously shift student groups based on Amplify Desmos Math mid-unit checkpoints, sub-unit assessments, and daily digital insights. Groups should never feel permanent; they must adapt as students master specific concepts or require new interventions. ●​ Station Rotations & Progression: As mathematical concepts grow in complexity, update independent practice stations to reflect current unit goals.
